CUD’s Prof. Naveed Yasin and Gayatri Nair Win 1st Place for Best Empirical Paper Award at the International Entrepreneurship Conference
Dubai, March 12th, 2023: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) Professor Naveed Yasin (Head of Creative Industries) and Mrs. Gayatri Nair (Teaching Assistant, Department of Creative Industries) presented a conference paper: “Am I also an entrepreneur? Determining the Efficacy of Enterprise Education in the Creative Industries: A Canadian University Dubai Perspective. The paper was presented at the 1st International Conference on Management, Economics and Social Science (ICMESS, 2023), hosted by the Maharaja Ranjit Singh University (India) and University of Tehran (Iran), held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Professor Yasin and Mrs. Nair were awarded the “Best Empirical Paper Award” in the Entrepreneurship track for their study’s originality and academic contribution to the field of entrepreneurship education. Mrs. Nair presented the paper at the international conference, marking her first such presentation.
The results of this study, which used mixed methods, indicated enhancements in all key enterprising characteristics among the total sample population of Creative Industries (CI) students at the Canadian University Dubai. However, there were specific variations due to the specializations of the pathways, which included students from Media Business (MB), Communication (COM), and Interior Design (ID). The novelty of this study is inherent in its concentration on atypical business student groups, the use of an innovative framework (PERI) for the qualitative data analysis, and the empirical investigation of an underexplored researched area and geographical context.
This study has implications for various groups such as academics, industry practitioners of CI, academic researchers, and stakeholders in the CI ecosystem. Additionally, the study contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (#9), which focuses on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. This Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes the importance of building resilient infrastructures, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.
According to Dr. Yasin, the motivation behind this study is clear. “As educators in the business world, we’ve long recognized the significance of delivering entrepreneurial education, skills and knowledge in Higher Education Institutions to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurial graduates for the rapidly evolving Creative Industries. However, it’s equally crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of such knowledge by examining how students apply their learning in real-world scenarios.”
Mrs. Gayatri Nair, a former CUD graduate, joined the Department of Creative Industries in 2022 as a Full-Time Teaching Assistant in Entrepreneurship. She has published several papers with Professor Yasin. Gayatri spoke about her experience: “The valuable experience I have learnt under the guidance of Prof. Naveed has expanded my knowledge significantly. I am proud to have become a published author and grateful to have chosen Canadian University Dubai as my academic institution, which fosters a culture of excellence in applied research, teaching, and enterprise excellence.”
Following this achievement, the authors plan to further advance this study for publication in a Scopus-indexed journal and utilize the insights gained to enhance the pedagogy of entrepreneurship education.

A letter from the Teleconference Host
Globally, COVID-19 has impacted our personal and professional lives. Both the social and professional measures taken to protect ourselves and our communities have introduced new elements of practice in our research studies. We also know that a big part of neuroscience and music field research takes place in, or close to, clinical settings where COVID-19 is treated. Therefore, it is logical to think that certain repercussions will consequently arise making it more difficult to complete our studies by altering, postponing, or jeopardizing our protocols.
Considering the above, and trying to provide a productive platform to discuss our current thoughts and inquiries, I would like to invite you to participate in the following tele-conference:
“Facing issues and discussing solutions during the COVID-19 era: An online discussion on active music and neuroscience protocols”
This teleconference will bring together top Music and Neuroscience researchers (panelists) sharing their experiences through a constructive discussion (40’). It will also provide time for a live, short Q&A session (30’) between the panelists and other interested researchers who are eager to present their field research experiences related to the current situation.
Hopefully, this event will provide a platform to de-isolate ourselves, map the shades of needs, and discuss the extraordinary elements we have faced or may face in the coming months. We also hope to propose ideas related to solutions on how to overcome or ease the problems we may encounter in the foreseeable future due to this ongoing crisis.
The teleconference will take place the 15th of April 2020, 9:30pm Dubai time and will use the Canadian University Dubai Cisco Webex platform. The Webex platform is provided free of charge to all attendees.
I personally hope for this online event to shape a positive global message not only for the music and neuroscience field but beyond. I hope for this event to open channels of communication to support the extensive ethos, sensitivity, and reactive perception that all practitioners in our field encompass.
Please do share this event with anyone who may be interested in participating, and I will look forward to seeing you all online.
Please stay home, stay safe and attend our conference!
Sincerely,
The Host,

Canadian University of Dubai Hosts Mena Writing Centres Conference
November 11th, 2014: Over 225 delegates from 34 institutions across 11 countries gathered at Canadian University Dubai for the international conference of MENAWCA (Middle East-North Africa Writing Centres’ Alliance) 2014, which this year featured as many presenters from the student peer-tutor community as from the teaching faculty.
Student representatives from across Middle East institutions, including American University of Sharjah, Zayed University, Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman University, King Saud University and Georgetown University Qatar, brought their own insights into the conference theme, “Sustaining Writing and Writing Centers in the MENA region”, through presentations, interactive workshops and panel discussions.
The conference was organized and co-chaired by Dr. Kathy O’Sullivan, CUD’s Executive Director of Student Affairs; and Ms. Nadine Ashkuri, Lecturer in the School of Liberal Arts. Both executive board members of MENAWCA, Dr. O’Sullivan and Ms. Ashkuri were determined to have the student voice take centre-stage at the event, in line with CUD’s ongoing mission to adopt innovative approaches to engaging students and promoting success.
Ms. Ashkuri said, “The 2014 MENAWCA conference was an absolutely empowering 48 hours. It was fantastic to be so well received by the academic community in and around the Middle East. Best of all, I was so proud of the community of students who both assisted and presented over the weekend.”
The keynote speaker at the event was the world-renowned Clint Gardner, fresh from receiving the International Writing Center Association Muriel Harris Service Award in Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. He reiterated that research proves a focus on writing and writing centres leads to student retention.
In her own reflection on the conference theme, Dr. O’Sullivan reiterated Clint Gardner’s point that writing centers are central to student retention, saying, “What is referred to in the research as freshman-to-sophomore persistence, which is the technical term for retention, is positively related to the provision of services such as those provided by a Writing Centre.
“Discussions that start when a student walks into the Writing Centre to ask for help with an assignment can easily turn into discussions that are as personal as they are academic. This is what ultimately helps students adapt to a university environment. Writing Centres matter – we’ve seen that in the quality of student peer-tutor presentations this weekend.”
The two-day interactive conference was characterised by the energy and passion of the participants, particularly the youth contingent who embraced the opportunity to present on an international platform. With many of the delegates visiting Dubai for the first time, it was also an opportunity for other writing centre practitioners to tour CUD’s dedicated Writing Centre facilities.
Dr. Molly McHarg, president of MENAWCA concluded, “I have been truly blown away, truly impressed, by the commitment of all the participants attending the conference this weekend. It is a delight to see the MENAWCA organization grow and flourish, and I am so grateful to CUD and all of this year’s sponsors for making this possible.”

CUD’s Students Win 1st Place | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers UAE Student Day 2022
Dubai, UAE, November 26th, 2022: Three teams supervised by Dr. Ahmed Al-Gindy from the Faculty of Engineering at CUD participated in the 16th IEEE student day 2022. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) hosted the annual competition in HCT Sharjah Women’s College Dubai on November 26th, 2022, between seventeen universities in the UAE. The competition featured four categories: Engineering Design, Community Service, Senior Design, and Cyber security – giving the students in the UAE the opportunity to showcase futuristic projects.
Two teams from Electrical Engineering participated in the Engineering Design category, and one team in the Community Service. All three teams ranked in the top 3 – two of CUD’s teams won 1st place, and one team won 3rd place.
CUD’s multi-disciplinary team from several faculties participated under the Faculty of Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Technology mentorship in the IEEE community service category. “The power of a multi-disciplinary team is electrifying. The teams comprised of students from Engineering, Journalism, and Public Relations – each student, delivered their area of expertise to make the project a success.” Dr. Ahmed Al Gindy, Faculty of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology
“The talent among our youth is impressive, and the IEEE provides a platform for our students to showcase innovative projects. Engineering does not stagnate but constantly evolves to contribute to society through dynamic developments. It is exciting that our students get to compete in a competition of this calibre and win 1st place, not once, but twice, and also take 3rd place for another category.” Dr. Ahmed Al Gindy, Faculty of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology
The concept of the Engineering Design Project challenged students to design and engineer an invention that transfers water from one place to another, only using mechanical systems and wind Energy. The use of electrical energy was not permitted in the project.
The students innovated a 3D-printed engineering model illustrating how the wind is converted into mechanical energy to transfer water effectively from a higher place of origin to a lower destination. “The innovation of our 3D model was inspired by ancient pumping mechanisms, indicating that our historical inventions have something to teach us.” Danica Reyes, CUD Student, Mechatronics
For the return journey of the water from a lower origin to a higher destination, the use of pumps would encourage the water transfer in larger volumes. The use of ball bearings was applied to the model to help with the overall flow of the water. CUD’s students presented forward-thinking projects, which received exceptional recognition from the jury. The students won 1st place in the competition for successfully pumping the highest volume of water at once.
“The project has inspired us to develop and contribute to countries that do not have access to basic facilities. We need to support our global system and work toward sustainable development goals through innovative projects, making a positive difference to the world.” Sham Mohamed Samour, CUD Student, Mechatronics
Of the three teams, twelve CUD students participated, and eleven were female. “The mentorship from our professors, Dr. Sherif Moussa and Dr. Ahmed Al Gindy has been important to support us in getting the right tools and materials and learning how to use them safely. I could not imagine, as a woman, that I would be able to use a drilling tool so well. It has inspired my business development ideas for the future.” Sham Mohamed Samour, CUD Student, Mechatronics
CUD is honoured to provide the learning space of innovation – where theory meets application. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Canadian University Dubai look forward to the next annual event.
“Engineering can contribute successfully to any area of the world – it is more than theory, and creative projects are born to change the world positively. Studying mechatronics has helped me to develop my existing skill set, but more so, awakened new skills within me that I did think were possible. Participating in the competition has been fundamental in realizing my creative potential.” Danica Reyes, CUD Student, Mechatronics.

GITEX connects leaders and revolutionary pioneers in the world of technology.
In June 2022, CUD and Software AG collaborated with students from CUD, together with 10 other universities in UAE, to enrol students in a competition called ‘Future Disruptors’. The competition required students to form a small group and to present three innovative projects – with each pioneering project concentrating on an aspect of the ‘United Nation’s Global Sustainability Development Goals’.
“A mass of food waste within the UAE calculates to an astounding net worth over $6 billion each year! Our generation has been gifted with substantial advancements in technology which can be applied to pursue sustainability.” Prateek Mishra, Computer Science Student, CUD.
Mr. Khan, Mr. Mishra, Mr. Dias’s project: ‘Resolving Food Waste While Rewarding You’ – ‘how to reutilize food waste to produce biogases’ was nominated by Software AG to be exhibited and presented at GITEX by CUD’s students. The hypothesis of the project is that food waste is generated and populated from all corners of the earth and the invention of a Digi-Bin would improve sustainability – through minimizing the negative effects of food waste, using the IoT (Internet of Things).
“It is rewarding to find a solution to improve the negative impacts food waste has on our environment.” Zahab Khan, Computer Science Student, CUD.
The Digi-Bin is a unique bin designed to collect an abundance of food waste – intricately connected to Software AG dashboard tools through Smart feature functioning. The smart app records the weight of the food deposited into the Digi-Bin, by simply tapping the device onto the bin’s NFC Tag. It is fitted with multiple sensors, which work alongside the IoT to connect to the internet and user app. The Software AG dashboard tool concisely calculates and instantly displays the food waste data to the user’s mobile app.
Users are rewarded with carbon credits – which can be applied as electricity saving coupons. The Digi-Bin encourages users to actively contribute towards sustainability; and save on electricity bills whilst doing so.
A filled Digi-Bin is transported to a biogas plant to be converted into biofuel – the process is to transform the food waste into renewable electricity which is redirected to the PowerGrid source. The food waste which is not suitable for this process is segregated to produce fertilizers – directed back to feeding the lands of Mother Earth.
“Valuable insights were received from key business players at GITEX. This has enabled us to develop our project further.” Denver Dias, Computer Science Student, CUD.
GITEX highlights futuristically applicable technologies and projects, accentuating innovative technology inventions and solutions – which in this case is redirected to promote sustainability. The exhibit fuels the evolution of the digital world – assembling extraordinary and significant global technological players under one roof.
“We thank CUD, Software AG, and GITEX for facilitating the pathways for us to showcase our sustainability-driven project to the world. This global platform has connected us to potential business collaborations, bringing Digi-Bin to life.” Zahab Khan, Computer Science Student, CUD.

Canadian University Dubai team wins U-start enterprise competition

Students’ autonomous robot innovation offers safe solution to disarm explosives
An autonomous robotics device that can disarm explosives, developed by students from Canadian University Dubai (CUD), has won first place in the U-start enterprise competition, staged recently at the Innovation Arabia 15 Conference and Exhibition.
Developed by mechatronics engineering students, Mohammad Faieq and Hajer Ben Mnaouer, with cyber security major, Issraa Ben Mnaouer, the device, known as Robosafe, is designed to provide a high-tech, safe, and cost-effective solution to neutralize hazardous environments. Using artificial intelligence to mimic the natural movement of a four-legged animal, Robosafe has the capacity to deactivate bombs and mines in war zones, carry objects around unsafe sites, and recognize faces to monitor suspicious activity.
Presenting their innovation in front of a panel of judges representing government departments and industry organizations, the team was up against 11 other groups in the final of the U-start competition, which brought together aspiring entrepreneurs from a range of technology and business disciplines. Impressing the panel with their prototype design and the business plan behind it, the CUD team went on to take first place in the competition and will now have access to expert mentoring and support to take their project forward.
Speaking about the motivation behind Robosafe, Mohammad said, “Accessing dangerous areas such as mines, collision sites, explosive sites, and areas affected by radioactivity is a major challenge. Companies and employees working in these hazardous environments are putting their health at risk, which could ultimately lead to major legal cases. While employers may consider the use of robots to replace their employees, problems arise when they develop devices that lack the modifications required to fit their needs, and costs can escalate quickly.”
Issraa continued, “Our aim is to provide cost-effective industrial robots to help companies cut expenditure and increase productivity. Robosafe is a low-cost product with a futuristic and innovative design based on an open-source platform. It is made using modular technology that will allow it to be fully customized to meet different client needs.”
As part of the competition, the three students from the University’s Faculty of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology were tasked with developing a business plan to demonstrate how they would turn their innovation into a viable enterprise. Hajer explained, “The competition required us to focus on the business as well as the technology side of innovation. In addition to developing a prototype, we had to conduct a competitor analysis, develop a marketing plan and produce a cost-benefit analysis, which gave us real-world experience of some key business disciples.”
Supervising the students in the project as part of their course, Assistant Professor, Dr. Ahmed Al-Gindy, said, “Entrepreneurship is embedded in the curriculum at CUD, and we are delighted to see students putting into practice what they learn through competitions like U-Smart. Our goal in the enterprise courses is to enable students to test the feasibility of their ideas and bring their innovations to life. The team’s success in this competition demonstrates that their studies have prepared them well to be the innovators and entrepreneurs of the future.”
The team received their winner’s certificates at the conclusion of the 15th edition of the Innovation Arabia Conference and Exhibition, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and President of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, under the theme ‘Innovation Everywhere’.

The virtual hackathon ran for six weeks and hosted more than 250 students from 36 universities across the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC). Social Clout was selected from 78 teams in phase one and won against the top 13 teams in phase two for presenting the best business idea in the “Social Impact” category. The top four teams from phase two have been invited to compete against peers from all over the world later this year.
Social Clout’s winning concept, “Hala Green”, is an environmental sustainability mobile application that combines the Arabic word “Hala” with an environmental aspect to show where Social Clout’s sustainability idea came from (United Arab Emirates).
During the event, Social Clout went through a structured program, participating in mentor sessions, skill clinics, and keynotes from partner organizations such as CEBC, MIT, Nissan, Renault, SAP, and Tetrapak. They also received guidance and helpful suggestions from mentor Bruno Grippay, Regional Director of Nissan in Africa – Middle East – India.
Speaking on behalf of the Social Clout team, Razan Khawatmi, International Business Student at Canadian University Dubai said: “ProjectSet was an outlet through which all of our team members were able to explore their creative tendencies. The project shaped our individual experiences, giving us the chance to try something different, and move out of our comfort zones. Through Hala Green, we intend to facilitate meaningful ideas to the world, one that would create maximum social impact.”
Not only do the team members of Social Clout come from different backgrounds, but they also come from different countries. Their unique personalities along with their varied expertise, diverse views, and expressions have proven to be a vital component to diversity within the mobile application.
Ms. Khawatmi continued: “There was a sense of acceptance and appreciation within the group which is why every single group member felt encouraged to pitch in their views on all details. Although every suggestion made by our team members was deeply respected, they were also open to various counterarguments because every member thought from a completely different perspective. The acceptance and constructive feedback we gave one another is what ensured that every single detail was refined; be it about the design of the application, the business plan, the business model canvas, or even every bit of the presentation.”
Despite their differences, Social Clout shares the same love and passion for the community and human welfare. The group was able to carry out what they wanted from the world through their app: to bring people together despite their differences and do something good for the earth.
CUD encourages entrepreneurship and innovation, promoting an educational environment that is conducive to learning, research and application. With a wide range of programs available, we believe in providing exciting opportunities for students to progress and grow both academically and professionally.
