Understanding that “a healthy body makes for healthy mind,” Canadian University Dubai promotes wellness and organizes many sporting activities on campus. Students can play football, tennis, basketball, cricket, badminton, volleyball, chess and table tennis at either competitive or recreational levels. Students can participate in any of the existing student clubs or form a new one. Some of the current clubs include:

Students are encouraged to take part as an active role in sports at university can help them develop practical skills like team work, discipline, sportsmanship, cooperation, dedication and decision making, supporting both their physical and personality development, and helping them progress in the future.
Our dedicated Sports Program offers students the opportunity for regular training and practices, intra and inter-mural competitions, and our sports teams play matches in tournaments and events across the UAE.

CUD and AWC host webinars to commemorate United Nations International Sport for Development and Peace

Thursday, April 22, 2021: Canadian University Dubai (CUD), in collaboration with Al Wasl Sports Club (AWC), hosted a series of webinars to commemorate the United Nations International Sport for Development and Peace on April 6, 2021.
Organized through CUD’s Department of Sport Management, the aim of these sessions was to provide attendees with an overview of football management in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Topics of discussion included; Club Licensing Management, Professional Football Management, and Sports Marketing in the country.
Pedro Correia, Sport Management Consultant, Al Wasl Sports Club and Commentator, Arabian Gulf League, shared his expertise and knowledge on the UAE football landscape, structure of a professional football club, and the requirements for a club to be officially licensed by the UAE Football Association (UAEFA).
Yousef Al Sayed, ex-player at Shabab Al Ahli Club, and Marketing Manager, Al Wasl Sports Club, shared his experience as a player in the Arabian Gulf League and the sports marketing scene in the country.
Dr. Leonardo Mataruna, Professor, Canadian University Dubai, and Advisor, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), mediated the debates and promoted the discussion using his experience as Football Commentator in the Arabian Gulf League.
The speakers were impressed by the inquisitive questions asked by the attendees who included CUD students, AWC members, and people from all around the world including UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabian, Qatar, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Brazil, England, and the United States of America.
CUD’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Sports Management prepares students to deal with matters that are unique to the sports industry. They learn to negotiate contracts with players and vendors through athletic valuation, attract crowds to sports events, and coordinate external communication through traditional and digital media, to strengthen the tie between the fans and the team.
CUD and AWC established a partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2021. The MoU represents an ongoing relationship that supports cooperation and engagement between the two parties through various activities, including: internship opportunities, academic-related projects and events, research initiatives, outreach programs and much more.

To commemorate this special day, Canadian University Dubai organized an Academic Seminar of Football Management with the partnership of AWC.
Dr. Leonardo Mataruna, Professor of Sports Management, Canadian University Dubai, said: “This year, we are all still facing an unprecedented situation. This occasion provides the opportunity for CUD and AWC to highlight the unique power of sport in supporting people and communities to overcome the challenges imposed by the pandemic.”
With reference to the yellow and red card in many sports, a #WhiteCard is a symbol created by the Peace and Sport organization to represent the positive power of sport for peace and social inclusion.
The core message of the 2021 #WhiteCard campaign is “behind each #WhiteCard, there is a story.” It seeks to highlight and draw attention to the stories of individuals and communities who have been positively impacted by sport all around the globe. Through a #WhiteCard, everyone can advocate for the unique power of sport for social development and peace, sharing personal stories on how sport has helped people to overcome challenges.
Yousef Al Sayed, Marketing Manager, Al Wasl Sports Club, said: “We are very proud to promote this initiative of the #WhiteCard with CUD in the United Arab Emirates. This is a universal movement from the sport community which has contributed to the promotion of peace all around the world.”

New MoU provides learning and engagement opportunities for sports management
students and professionals
Thursday, June 3, 2021: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) and Al Wasl Sports Club (AWC) have established a new partnership to promote education and professional development opportunities that will help build capacity across the UAE’s growing sports management sector.
The new collaboration was sealed with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organizations. The partnership is set to boost cooperation and engagement through a range of initiatives, including student internships, academic-related projects and events, research activities and outreach programs. A fast-track course for professional development in the sector is one initiative currently in the works.
The MoU signing follows the launch last year of CUD’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Sports Management program. The first undergraduate degree of its kind in the UAE, the four-year course prepares students for a career in the dynamic and exciting business of professional sports.
The program is led by Associate Professor, Dr. Leonardo Jose Mataruna-Dos-Santos, himself an accomplished sportsman, having participated as part of the Brazilian Olympic Judo Team in London 2012, Beijing 2008, Athens 2004, and Sydney 2000. Alongside his extensive academic experience in the region, Dr. Mataruna-Dos-Santos is also a commentator and advisor for the Arabian Football Gulf League.
Speaking about the partnership, Dr. Mataruna-Dos-Santos said: “This MoU will provide CUD students with hands-on exposure to the inside of the industry in the region, which will add real value to their learning experience. Through internships, real-life case studies and other professional interactions, it will help them to develop the professional networks they need to enter and advance within the sector.”
Mr. Mohammad Ali Amer, Executive Director of Al Wasl Sports Club, expressed his pleasure in partnering with the University, which ranks among the leading educational institutions at the regional and global level, saying: “The partnership comes from our keenness to implement social responsibility, which Al Wasl has always been proactive in implementing and is consistent with the vision and strategy of the club, which aims to enrich and consolidate cooperation with institutions in all fields, to achieve national goals in all cultural, educational, sports and social aspects.”
Prof. Karim Chelli, President and Vice-Chancellor of CUD, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Al Wasl Sports Club, which has been awarded the title of club of the century in the UAE, in recognition of its tremendous achievements. Prof. Chelli remarked: “As an internationally-recognized educational institution for higher learning, Canadian University Dubai is committed to providing unique opportunities to our students that will enhance their academic experience and support their scholarly ambitions. Our willingness to continue to build these relationships reinforces our determination, hard work and compassion to succeed for our students, our faculty members and our community.”

CUD Alumni Reunite to Take on Student Basketball Team

Alumni from Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have reunited to go head to head with existing students in the first meeting of the current and former university basketball teams.
Cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd, the teams played out a hard-fought match that saw the students dominate the first half, with the alumni team coming back in the second. By the end of the game, nothing could separate the two teams and the match ended in deadlock with a final score of 59 points each.
The game was organized by CUD Sports Manager, Mr. John Sherratt, and captain of the student basketball team, Dino Skikic, who has played with members of both the student and alumni teams during his time at the university.
Dino said, “As I’m about to graduate myself, I thought it would be a good opportunity to initiate this alumni-student competition and to bring together these two skillful sets of challengers.
“Both groups trained hard for the event and it was great to see the friendly rivalry between what were evenly matched sides. I hope this will be the first of many matches and I look forward staying connected with the university through the sport, and coming back as a member of the alumni team.”
CUD celebrates Mandela Day by joining ‘The Biggest Judo Class’

To celebrate Mandela Day, Canadian University Dubai (CUD) joined ‘The Biggest Judo Class’ on April 18, 2021 organized by the European Judo Union in Lisbon, Portugal. The event was hosted by Olympic Athlete Nuno Delgado during the 2021 European Judo Tournament, with participants attending virtually from all over the world. Performing physical exercise in live streaming mode for 30 minutes and using hashtag #BJC2021 on social media, participants were brought together around the values of judo and its moral code; respect, courage, modesty, self-control, friendship, sincerity, honour, courtesy, and sustainability. Students and faculty of CUD’s Sports Management program took part in the festivities from their homes in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
CUD Holds Annual Pool Competition

A total of 32 competitors took part in a closely fought Pool Competition organized by Mr. Dusan Popovic, Sports Coordinator of CUD.Students and staff members battled through the initial stages, each game consisting of a single frame with the winners progressing through to the later stages. The semis and the final were each fought over three frames. The winner of the competition was Kristin Mathew who was awarded a trophy and AED 500. She defeated Abdallah Baswaid who nevertheless picked up AED 250 and a silver medal. In third place with a bronze medal and prize of AED 100 came Farouk Mohammed Dalhatu who defeated Sheikh Mohammed Abzal in the losers final. Two new Pool Tables were brought in for the Competition, increasing the facilities now available for indoor sport in the university.
CUD hosts Annual Soccer Competition

Local High schools competed for CUD’s Canada Cup 2019 under the direction of Mr. Dusan Popovic, Sports Coordinator in the university. The event was held in JSS Private School, CUD’s practice venue for soccer. A total of fifty-five students from four teams took part in the competition with the American International School, Dubai emerging as eventual winners, defeating the International School of Arts and Sciences in the final. Third and fourth places went to Dubai National School Al Twar and the Collegiate American School respectively. Speaking after the event, Mr. Dusan said the competition was close and the standard of football was excellent. He thanked JSS Private School for providing the venue and congratulated all the coaches for preparing their teams so well.
Free Basketball Tournament

The University holds a free basketball tournament where students, staff and the local community could participate by registering as tournament participants on the web portal, the event was an open door for the public of the community to observe the tournament and become part of the culture of sport and well-being that the University promotes in its facilities.
Canadian University Dubai Sports Day

The university, in order to promote the culture of sports in the community, celebrated the Sports Day where CUD opened its doors for the participation of students, staff and people from the local community as well as other universities from the different sports activities that rewarded the winners, football matches, basketball, table tennis. The event was free to access and relatives of the participants’ spectators gave encouragement in the competitions.
