CUD’s Luxury Marketing students embarked on the educational tour to the Palazzo Versace in Dubai, a culmination of the striking ‘Pietra di Fiume’ design of the iconic Medusa and Greek décor. The students were warmly welcomed by Ms. Ionela Savescu, the Director of Marketing and Public Relations. During the tour, Ms. Savescu provided the students with a detailed introduction to the hotel, its seven-year journey, and the Versace brand. The hotel’s Creative Interior Designer, Ms. Donatella Versace, was also introduced to the students.
Reminiscent of a 16th Italian Palace, Palazzo Versace Dubai is a Neoclassical masterpiece with subtle traces of Arabian architecture. Featuring a striking entrance, high ceilings, landscaped gardens, and a range of well-crafted Italian furnishings, the hotel is truly symbolic of the Versace lifestyle. A walk through the 5-star hotel’s spaces reveals several exclusive designs and fabrics from Versace, while the lagoon pools and reflection ponds complement the serenity of the lush gardens that surround the hotel – a true luxury retreat for leisure travellers.
The tour provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of the luxury brand, its construction, and the high-quality materials used in its creation, which are exclusively sourced from Italy. Every single piece of furniture and fabric that adorns the hotel rooms, suites, and residences, is designed and tailor-made by Versace exclusively for the Palazzo Versace Hotel in Dubai.
The students were also given insights into the artwork displayed throughout the hotel, including a distinguished 1.5-million-piece hand-cut mosaic, which is prominently placed in the hotel lobby. The educational tour was an exceptional learning opportunity for CUD’s Luxury Marketing students, as it enabled them to gain practical knowledge and insights into the strategies and workings of a world-renowned luxury brand. By examining the materials and design elements used in the creation of the Palazzo Versace Dubai, the students were able to deepen their understanding of the luxury industry and its unique marketing strategies.
Each of the hotel’s 9 restaurants and bars is designed to have an al fresco terrace to reflect the heritage of Palazzos. The tour led the students to the lobby terrace where they could view the hotel configuration including the buildings and residence wings. Next, they visited Vanitas, the signature restaurant of all Versace Hotels & Resorts, where they had the chance to meet the chef. The chef spoke to the students about Italian cuisine and the restaurant’s decor, which includes hand-painted images depicting the Calabria region of Italy, the hometown of Gianni Versace. After that, the students visited Giardino restaurant, which features marble “terrazzo” flooring, columns, and a wallcovering with a jungle motif inspired by the Versace wallpaper collection. The students proceeded to Q’s Bar and Lounge, the inaugural bar of music icon Quincy Jones. The establishment has been recognized as Dubai’s top live music venue, featuring performances by artists personally selected by Jones. It was mentioned that some tourists make a special trip to Dubai just to experience an evening at Q’s Bar and Lounge.
Following that, the students were taken to the swimming pool area that had a design resembling the same found in Versace’s Miami residence. The three outdoor pools are decorated with mosaic tiles and surrounded by palm trees and flowers. Subsequently, the students were given a tour of the event spaces, where Ms. Savescu discussed these spaces and catering to consumer preferences. Ms. Savescu also highlighted the importance of educating clients, building trust in the brand, and fostering brand loyalty which are essential tasks for Versace’s marketing team.
Ms. Savescu emphasized the distinctive features of Palazzo Versace Dubai that set it apart, including its luxurious design elements. Moreover, unlike most other luxury hotels that are managed by hospitality companies, Versace is managed by a team directly hired by the brand. In addition, the students were taken to the boutique spa which is known for its evolving and innovative range of products and treatments. The spa’s design, created by Versace, is one of the hotel’s key features. Its exquisite white walls are adorned with mother-of-pearl details and dark rooms with grey mosaics and Granito Nero flooring.
The tour concluded with a question-and-answer discussion in which CUD’s students learned more about the hotel’s market segment, clientele demands and expectations, the evolving tasks of a luxury marketer, the sense of belonging to a brand, and other significant marketing topics in luxury services. Upon departing Palazzo Versace Dubai, CUD’s students gained a comprehensive understanding of marketing luxury goods and services, the interconnection between luxury and art, and the process of localizing luxury services, while maintaining the brand’s core identity. The insights the students acquired from the industry experts allowed them to connect learned academic knowledge to practical business scenarios. As a result, the students have a more distinct perception of their career aspirations.

CUD participates in the GCC eHealth Workforce Development Conference 2021
Sunday, November 21, 2021: Canadian University Dubai’s (CUD) Dr. Ahmad Ali Ahmad Okasha, Associate Professor, Faculty of Communication, Arts and Sciences and Dr. David Santandreu Calonge, Associate Professor and Director, Corporate Training, were invited to represent the University in a roundtable discussion at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) eHealth Workforce Development Conference 2021 (eHWDC 2021) that took place at The Conrad Hotel Nov. 7 –8, 2021 under the theme of “The Role of Higher Education in the eHealth Capacity Building”.
When it comes to aligning the public higher-education systems with the workforce needs of a modern economy, state policymakers are aware of a paradox: on the one hand, there is recognition of the need for more people to have college degrees, regardless of subject matter. On the other hand, workforce experts and business leaders agree that there is a “skills gap” wherein individuals with post-secondary education are unable to fill the jobs that are available or find employment consistent with their degrees.
Representatives were invited to attend eHWDC 2021 from leading medical and life science universities, government agencies, hospitals, and companies in the GCC region to discuss what steps must be taken to create sustainable models that will help prepare people with the right skills in eHealth to fill the gaps in the market. A discussion was also held pertaining to what businesses can do to support this new generation and help develop the region’s education system.
Speaking of the experience, Dr. David said: “Our participation in this roundtable was an invaluable opportunity to meet academic and industry leaders to discuss innovative programs, graduates’ skills, upskilling, industry-university collaboration, knowledge transfer, challenges and best practices.”
Dr. Ahmad added: “Now is the time to invest in the eHealth workforce and professional development. The GCC region has been witnessing the procurement of over five major Health Information Exchange(HIE)projects since last year. Being here today as representatives of CUD enables us to bring our innovative approaches to the conversation.”
CUD’s involvement demonstrates the University’s willingness to work together with community stakeholders -government, education, industry, healthcare organizations and others- across the GCC region to develop a framework for standards and professional development in eHealth that will create a loyal, long-term workforce and offer an array of opportunities for generations to come.

CUD Participates in World Anti-Doping Agency’s Play True Day

Tuesday, June 1, 2021: Since 2014, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have celebrated ‘Play True Day’ in April – a day that is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting clean sport around the globe.
This year’s international campaign reached over 87 million people and saw athletes, national and regional anti-doping organizations, sports federations, governments, major event organizers, and other stakeholders from the global anti-doping community unite on April 9 in celebration of the Play True message.
Centred around the theme ‘What does Play True mean to you?’, Dr. Leonardo Mataruna, Professor of Sport Management, Canadian University Dubai (CUD), and member of both the Education Committee and Social Science Research Expert Advisory at WADA, hosted an online debate along with CUD Sports Management students and several Dubai sports clubs (Karate 365, Heroes Academy, Dubai Olympic Gymnastic Club, and Rossi BJJ Team).
Speaking about the significance of anti-doping education, Dr. Mataruna stressed that it should be implemented in schools and in basic fundamental curricula around the world: “Discussing this theme at the university level is important to prepare future leaders and to enhance the conversation globally. Our job as educators is to make children and young people aware of the risks of using illicit drugs in preparing them not only for sport, but for life.”
Education is imperative to protecting clean sport. The Bachelor of Business Administration in Sports Management at CUD prepares students to deal with matters like these that are unique to the sports industry. Students also learn to negotiate contracts with players and vendors through athletic valuation, attract crowds to sports events, and coordinate external communication through traditional and digital media, to strengthen the tie between the fans and the team.
Mohammed Al Murawwi Al Blooshi, professional cycling athlete, Paralympic coach, and student of Sports Management, Canadian University Dubai, said: “Sports Management is fundamental to study anti-doping education to promote an equal sport for all. To celebrate Play True Day on April 9th was to promote clean sport and share values of fair play.”
The inspiration for Play True Day stems from a WADA-hosted Education Conference in 2013, which was attended by 17 South American countries. While the celebration started as a small South American initiative, last year, the agency’s digital and social media campaign reached over six million people with numerous individuals and organizations taking part from around the globe.
To highlight the success of this year’s campaign, WADA created a Play True Day 2021 recap video, showcasing the celebrations that took place around the world.
CUD Students Visit Hamdan Sports Complex

September 16, 2015: Students from the Canadian University Dubai (CUD) Bachelor of Architecture program have visited the city’s Hamdan Sports Complex to understand more about the design and construction of sustainable swimming pools.
The venue was selected as a local case study for the group as part of their environmental design course, which challenges students to look at the principles of sustainability in a wide range of architectural design scenarios.
Accompanies by Assistant Professors, Dr. Hoshiar Nooraddin and Mr. Luca Donner, the students learnt about the fundamental design features and functions that enable the world-class sports facility to operate in an environmentally-conscious way.
From the sophisticated filter system that allows the pool’s water to be recycled and re-used, to the application of solar energy to maintain the water temperature and outdoor lighting, the students witnessed some of the most ground-breaking environmentally friendly technology in the field.
Completed in 2010, the Hamdan Sports Complex boasts two 50-meter swimming pools and a 15,000 seating capacity. Set on 24 hectares of land on the Emirates Road, it is one of the biggest multi-purpose developments of its kind in the world, with the capability to be transformed into a dry-land facility for non-aquatic and non-sports events.
What most impressed Architecture student Irada Boucherabine was the holistic nature of the design. She said, “The entire development – the Complex and its surrounding landscape – has clearly been designed as a whole, to maximize the natural environment and resources that help to promote sustainable features, such as the use of sunlight.”
For fellow student Yasmeen Adel, it was the design’s use of technology to achieve optimum functionality, as well as sustainability, that most stood out. She said, “The pools featured moveable floors that could change their depth at the touch of a button, making the complex a really versatile as well as sustainably operated facility.”
The group of students will now be challenged with adopting and adapting some of these high-tech concepts and features in creating their own vision for a sustainable swimming pool design.

CUD participates in Dubai Fitness Challenge

Over 50 Canadian University Dubai students supported the Dubai Fitness Challenge by taking part in the record-breaking Dubai Run on the city’s iconic Sheikh Zayed Road. The students joined 70,000 participants to run on Dubai’s main highway section, which was open for a public run for the first time.
The main goal was to promote active lifestyle among CUD students by encouraging them to participate in the 5km or 10km run.
Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) is an annual event that challenges everyone in the city to complete 30 minutes of activity a day for 30 days. It not only cultivates fitness-focused mindsets but also inspires Dubai’s residents to work towards a common goal of maintaining healthier, active lifestyles in the long run.
Dubai Fitness Challenge was packed with over 13,000 classes and activities, from community runs to mass yoga gatherings to triathlons in the Hatta hills and on the Palm Jumeirah. No matter the age or ability, there were events catering to everyone in the city. Fitness star Joe Wicks led the region’s largest ever HIIT class at Skydive Dubai, while WWE® Superstar Becky Lynch® led a session at the Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital.

After the successful completion of the challenge, CUD Alumna, Riham Omar, commented, “This was the first time ever when the city’s biggest highway was open for a public run and that’s what makes this event so special. Going there as a team was an amazing idea, it felt great to see the CUD family running together and motivating each other”.
